This section is dedicated to the local trails here in Arizona (and maybe some elsewhere) that we spend time on. We've included current maps and real-time trail data for those of you looking to hit some of the places we frequent. This list doesn't have everything that's available (which is pretty awesome when you think of it) but it should give a good representation of what AZ has to offer and serve as a starting point for anyone looking for new adventures.
PHOENIX AREA:
Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve
Rated 10 of 10 The pre-eminent flowy, fun singletrack romp in the Phoenix Area. The City of Scottsdale has done an exceptional job of incorporating the old Pima/Dynamite trails and moto trails and cutting new trails. The middle unit is the lynchpin in the Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve, linking the North Unit, South Unit and McDowell Mountain Park together. If in the mood for a big day, all four units can be combined into linking over 100 miles of trail. The riding featured here as well as the South Unit tends to be a little bit more technical than what is featured at Brown's. Like it's other two brothers, the South Unit contains some very well designed, but technical trails. The South Unit gives you access to three East/West Passes for those looking to increase the degree of difficulty. |
McDowell Mountain Park
Rating 9 of 10 Like its neighbor, the Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve, McDowell Mountain Park is chock full of good, fun trails with a ton of flow. The Pemberton Loop and Escondido are the money trails here. McD also features the only mtb specific trails in the area at the Competitive Loops with a pump track in the parking lot as warm up. |
Usery Park
Rating 6 of 10 Great beginner trail system. Good flow...particularly if you are looking for an easy day. Can be linked up with Pass Mountain for those looking for a bit more chunder. |
Hawes
Rating 8 of 10 Classic East Valley trail system. User built on a combination of State Trust land and Tonto National Forest. They've always had a good thing going but with the renovations of Goat and Alpe D'Huez and the additions of Cactus Nectar, Iron Goat and Red Mountain Rush, a good thing has turned into a great thing. |
Santan Mountain Park
Rating 6 of 10 Another fairly easy trail system, although the relatively recently added Dynamite trail has rounded out the riding experience. Watch out for the death sand in general but particularly on Malpais and Rock Peak Trails. |
South Mountain
Rating 8 of 10 Welcome to the largest municipal park in the US of A. Trails run everywhere and range from XC on Desert Classic to Technical Downhill on Mormon/National, Geronimo, Corona De Loma and Javelina. A little something for everyone. |
Papago
Rating 6 of 10 Another classic in town ride. Close to the Zoo. The city has recently come in and sanitized a portion of the best singletrack but there are still cool sections that run along the red rock. |
Phoenix Mountain Preserve
Rating 7 of 10 Smack dab in the middle of it all. Another trail system (like SoMo) with a bit of everything. Trail 100 is your go to here but there is a ton more to see sprawling in all directions. |
Phoenix Sonoran Preserve
Rating 8 of 10 Like it's namesake relative over in Scottsdale, the PSP features rolling, flowy singletrack. Close to Anthem and Cave Creek areas. Both the North and South unit feature rollers and climbs and can be linked together via Ocotillo (N) to Bobcat (S). |
Gold Canyon
Rating 8 of 10 Burgeoning system located in the Far East Valley, past Apache Junction. Mix of everything from double track old jeep trails on Old Horse to stellar intermediate on Vortex, Diamonback and Don't Fence Me In to off the Richter Scale technical at HooDoo. |
FINS
Rating - Brother Marcos Says "it's good" Rumor has it that this system was developed by the same righteous people responsible for some of the best singletrack in Tucson, Fantasy Island. Hence the name FINS. Supposedly, an acronym for Fantasy Island North System. The trails feature a little bit of everything including wooden ramp sections just for fun. |
